Ben’s Chili Bowl Is Getting a New Mural—And DC Gets to Help Decide

A new chapter is unfolding on U Street.

The current mural at Ben’s Chili Bowl—a vibrant tribute that has stood since 2017—is officially coming down. Over the years, it’s become a beloved backdrop for locals and visitors alike, capturing the spirit of DC and honoring a wide range of influential figures. But after nearly a decade of exposure to the elements, it’s time for something new.

As the iconic restaurant prepares for its grand reopening on May 1, it’s also launching an exciting community-driven initiative: #BensNewMural.

Rather than deciding behind closed doors, Ben’s Chili Bowl is inviting the public to help shape the next mural by submitting ideas for who should be featured. From artists and activists to historical figures, celebrities, athletes, and homegrown DC legends—all suggestions are on the table. Even past honorees can be nominated again.

Submissions are open now through May 10, giving the community a chance to play a direct role in continuing a powerful visual tradition on one of DC’s most historic corridors.
