Pedestrian Fatality | Shanell Holiday, 29, in Northwest

The Metropolitan Police Department's (MPD) Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a traffic fatality involving a pedestrian that occurred in Northwest.
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., Third District officers responded to the intersection of North Capitol Street and New York Avenue, Northwest, for the report of a crash involving a pedestrian. Officers located an adult female suffering from serious injuries. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene, and after finding no signs consistent with life, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation determined that a pedestrian was walking north in the west crosswalk of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, Northwest. While in the middle of the intersection, the traffic signal turned green for west bound traffic. As the pedestrian continued to cross New York Avenue, a blue 2011 Subaru Legacy struck the pedestrian and fled the scene.
The decedent has been identified as 29-year-old Shanell Holiday, of Southeast, DC.
