May 29 - 31 | We Make History Opening Events at the Anacostia Community Museum

The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is reopening with a full weekend of events celebrating its new exhibition, We Make History, which explores how Washington-area communities preserve stories, document change, and shape the nation’s history. The exhibition officially opens May 30, 2026, and will remain on view through January 2028.

We Make History: After Dark with Marcus Mitchell
Friday, May 29, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Guests can enjoy an exclusive sneak preview of the exhibition during an after-hours experience featuring live music by DMV saxophonist and pianist Marcus Mitchell, along with light bites and beverages. This event is for guests 21 and older.

Opening Day at ACM: We Make History
Saturday, May 30, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The museum officially reopens with a full day of family-friendly programming, including guided tours, storytelling and art activities, curator conversations, workshops, a portrait station, and wellness experiences. Visitors can also explore the FRESHFARM ACM Farm Stand throughout the day.

We Make History: After Dark with Joi Carter
Saturday, May 30, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Celebrate opening night with live music from vocalist Joi Carter and her band during an evening of culture, music, and after-hours access to the exhibition. Light bites and beverages will also be available. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

We Make History Weekend
Sunday, May 31, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
The opening weekend concludes with another full day of creative workshops, storytelling activities, guided tours, and community-centered programming inspired by the themes of We Make History.
