June 28 | Experience CHOCOLATE: A Motion-Poetry Tribute to Black DC
Residents and visitors are invited to experience a powerful afternoon of film, reflection, and community conversation when CHOCOLATE: A Motion-Poetry Homage to Black D.C. comes to the Go-Go Museum & Café on Sunday, June 28.
Directed by filmmaker Eliamani Ismail, CHOCOLATE is a lyrical short film that weaves together poetry, music, portraiture, and movement to honor the people, history, culture, and resilience of Black Washington, DC. Through a unique artistic lens, the film captures the spirit of a city and community that has shaped generations while continuing to evolve.
The film has earned recognition at several prominent festivals, including the DC/DOX Film Festival, the Washington, DC International Film Festival, and Anacostia Shorts, highlighting its impact as both a work of art and a celebration of local culture.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a community panel discussion exploring issues that continue to shape the city today. Topics will include gentrification, cultural memory, preservation, and the future of Black Washington, offering space for thoughtful dialogue and shared perspectives.
Hosted at the Go-Go Museum & Café in the heart of Historic Anacostia, the event brings together storytelling, community engagement, and cultural reflection in one meaningful afternoon.
