DC Residents May Qualify for Student Loan Forgiveness — Free Help Is Available

DC residents struggling with student loan payments or wondering whether they qualify for loan forgiveness can get free, one-on-one assistance through the District's Office of the Student Loan Ombudsman (OSLO).

The office helps borrowers navigate student loan repayment and explore options that could potentially lower their monthly payments or lead to loan forgiveness.

What Assistance Is Available?

DC residents can receive free counseling to:

  • Understand student loan repayment options.

  • Explore ways to lower monthly payments.

  • Determine eligibility for student loan forgiveness programs.

  • Resolve issues with student loan servicers.

  • Better understand their rights and responsibilities as borrowers.

Nonprofit Employees May Qualify for Loan Forgiveness

Employees of qualifying government agencies and nonprofit organizations, including many 501(c)(3) arts organizations, may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

The federal program allows eligible borrowers to have their remaining Direct Loan balances forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments while meeting the program's employment and other requirements.

Employees can check whether their organization qualifies by using the PSLF Employer Search Tool and entering their employer's Employer Identification Number (EIN).

How to Get Free Assistance

Residents interested in exploring their student loan repayment or forgiveness options can contact the DC Office of the Student Loan Ombudsman for guidance.

Student loan forgiveness is not automatic, and eligibility varies by program. Residents are encouraged to explore their options and take advantage of the District's free counseling services before making decisions about their loans.
