Especially During a Snow Emergency)

Snow emergencies in Washington, DC often come with temporary parking restrictions to allow plows and emergency vehicles to move safely. If you return to where you parked and your car is gone, it was likely towed—not stolen.

Here’s how to find it quickly.

Step 1: Check if Your Vehicle Was Towed

During snow emergencies, vehicles parked on designated snow routes, emergency routes, or in restricted areas may be relocated or impounded by DC Department of Public Works.

Step 2: Locate Your Vehicle

Have your license plate number ready. Staff can tell you whether your vehicle was relocated nearby or taken to a city impound lot.

  • Be prepared to pay towing, ticket, and any storage fees

  • Bring a valid ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance
