SNAP Recipients Can Save 50% on Metro Fares

If you're receiving SNAP benefits, here's a program that could help you save money every time you ride Metro.

WMATA's Metro Lift program gives eligible SNAP recipients in DC, Maryland, and Virginia 50% off Metrobus and Metrorail fares. Whether you're commuting to work, heading to a doctor's appointment, grocery shopping, or visiting family, those savings can really add up.

The best part? Enrollment is free and takes as little as five minutes.

Even better, Metro Lift is expanding. As of July 1, 2026, riders can also use their Metro Lift benefits on Arlington Transit (ART), making it even easier to get around the region.

What you'll need to enroll:

  • A SmarTrip card

  • Your active SNAP (EBT) card

  • A valid government-issued photo ID

  • Your phone number

If you're signing up other members of your SNAP household, you'll also need your SNAP benefits summary.

You can enroll online from home or visit one of several locations to sign up in person.
