Sept 7 | Black Joy Sunday in Anacostia Park
Anacostia Park, Field 6 (near the skating rink, basketball court side)
Sunday, September 7, 2025 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
What began in the summer of 2015 as a response to grief, violence, and the urgent need for collective healing has grown into one of DC’s most vibrant traditions. Black Joy Sunday, first held in Malcolm X Park to reclaim Black space, has spent the past decade standing as an unapologetic celebration of resilience, humanity, and liberation.
This year’s gathering — Black Joy Sunday: Still Rooted in Joy — honors the 10th anniversary of Black Lives Matter DC (originally BLM DMV). From a handful of strangers meeting in the basement of the MLK Library, BLM DC has blossomed into a powerful ecosystem of artists, activists, healers, and organizers who remain deeply committed to Black liberation.
The 2025 celebration promises:
✨ Free food, music, dancing, games, and community fun for all ages
✨ Free haircuts on site
✨ Prize giveaways (registration required)
✨ Community resource tables and partner organizations
Participation is free and open to all — but registration is required to enter prize giveaways.
Come ready to eat, dance, laugh, and connect. Black Joy Sunday is more than an event — it’s a living testament to history, victories, and the collective future still in the making. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to sign up.
