Helping Victims Of Domestic Violence

The Victim Witness Assistance Unit (VWAU) works with other governmental and community agencies to offer comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence. The VWAU represents the United States Attorney's Office in two Domestic Violence Intake Centers in the District of Columbia. Both centers provide information about criminal and civil remedies available to help protect victims of domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Intake Centers are a partnership between the United States Attorney's Office, Superior Court of the District of Columbia, the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, the Metropolitan Police Department, Women Empowered Against Violence and the District of Columbia Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The centers' staffs can provide referrals to shelters, counseling, assist victims with filing for a Civil Protection Order, explain the criminal justice process for criminal cases, get police reports, help with finding an attorney and provide referrals to other necessary services.
