New Library and Transit Improvements Coming to Congress Heights

A major investment in Ward 8 is moving forward as District leaders celebrate the redevelopment of the Congress Heights Metro Station.

The project will bring a new 23,000-square-foot Congress Heights Library and a redesigned bus loop to the St. Elizabeths East campus. The new library will replace the current Parklands-Turner Library, expanding from 5,000 square feet to a modern facility featuring dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults, as well as makerspaces, co-working areas, recording studios, and other community resources.

The redesigned bus loop will improve transit connections throughout the campus and create a more welcoming gateway to the growing mixed-use community.

Construction on the new bus loop is expected to begin this summer, and the library is scheduled to open in 2027.

The project is the latest milestone in the ongoing transformation of St. Elizabeths East, which has already welcomed new housing, retail, healthcare facilities, and entertainment destinations, including CareFirst Arena and Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health.
