Need Legal Help? DC Affordable Law Firm Offers Free and Low-Cost Civil Legal Services

Finding affordable legal representation isn't always easy. While some District residents qualify for free legal aid, many earn too much to be eligible but still can't afford the cost of hiring a private attorney.

That's where DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) comes in.

DCALF provides free and low-cost civil legal services to eligible DC residents, helping bridge the gap in access to justice. Most residents who meet the organization's income guidelines qualify for free legal assistance, while others may be eligible for confidential legal consultations for $200 or less, with fees based on household size, income, and residency. In some cases, consultation fees may be waived.

After completing a client intake, individuals meet confidentially with a DCALF attorney to discuss their legal issue, understand their options, and determine whether they qualify for ongoing legal representation. Many eligible clients receive continued legal assistance at no cost.

Who Can Apply?

DC Affordable Law Firm generally serves individuals and families with household incomes of up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. Eligibility is based on household size and income, and residents are encouraged to complete an intake even if they are unsure whether they qualify.

Note: Eligibility guidelines are based on the 2025 Federal Poverty Level and are updated as federal and local funding guidelines change.
