Sunday, January 11, 2026

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Mathew McCollough, Director of the Office of Disability Rights. Mat served with extraordinary dedication and compassion in public service, and his leadership made a lasting impact on both our government and the disability community. His career reflected his deep belief in dignity, opportunity, and respect for every individual.

“Beyond his work within the District, Mat was recognized nationally for his expertise and commitment and was appointed by President Obama to serve on the United States Access Board, where he helped advance accessibility standards that promote full integration and participation for people with disabilities.

“During this difficult time, our thoughts and condolences are with Mat’s wife and family, his friends and loved ones, ODR staff, and community members and colleagues who mourn his loss. Mat’s legacy of service and advocacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
