John Smith, 66, Arrested for Homicide of Rodney Bennett, 65 in Northeast

The Metropolitan Police Department announces an arrest in a homicide that occurred earlier this month in Northeast.    

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, at approximately 7:07 p.m., Sixth District officers responded to the 100 block of 45thStreet, Northeast, inside of an apartment, for the report of an unconscious person. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim who was unconscious and not breathing, suffering from trauma to his body.  DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene. Despite all lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

The decedent has been identified as 65-year-old Rodney Bennett, of Northeast, D.C. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.       

On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located 66-year-old John Smith of Northeast, D.C. He was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed.
