JOB ALERT | Community Lawyering Attorney - Starting at $64,000/year

Bread for the City’s Legal Clinic works to ensure access to justice for individuals in our nation’s capital. The Legal Clinic provides front-line civil legal services primarily in the areas of housing, family, immigration, and public benefits law. The Community Lawyering Project (CLP) uses legal advocacy and organizing to help achieve solutions to community-identified issues in ways that develop local leadership and lasting institutions that can continue to exert power to effect systemic change. CLP does this work in collaboration with community members and in coalition with other legal services organizations and advocacy groups in a way that is strategic, while still being responsive to a community's vision and the political landscape. 

Position Description:
The CLP Staff Attorney will provide legal services to tenants and/or tenant associations and assist in the daily operation of Bread for the City’s CLP practice and the Legal Clinic. The CLP Staff Attorney will conduct legal intakes, provide legal advice and brief services, as well as handle a caseload of individual housing-related cases.

In addition, the CLP Staff Attorney will help support housing-related organizing efforts in the District.

Attorney salaries start at $64,000, for those admitted to the DC Bar or able to practice under Rule 49(c)(8) or 49(c)(9). Lateral attorneys receive an additional $1,000 for every year of paid legal experience for which a JD is required and at least 32 hours per week worked, capped at $3,000 (or 3 years). Attorneys with certain bilingual language skills may receive an additional $1,000 upon demonstrated fluency. Also, the DC Bar Foundation offers a Loan Repayment Assistance Program to qualified Bread for the City attorneys, providing renewable one-year, interest-free, forgivable loans.
