DC OAG Offers Free Tenant & Consumer Complaint Help

Residents in Washington, DC who are dealing with issues involving landlords or businesses may be able to get help through the Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer and Tenant Response (CTR) program.

CTR is a free and voluntary complaint resolution process designed to help tenants and consumers resolve disputes outside of court.

The program may assist if:

  • The tenant currently lives in DC, or lived in DC when the issue occurred

  • The consumer is a DC resident

  • The business involved is located or headquartered in DC

Submitting a complaint online takes about five minutes. Residents should be prepared to provide:

  • Contact information (mailing address, phone number, and email)

  • A description of the issue and the resolution being requested

  • The name of the landlord or business involved

Residents who need help submitting a complaint can contact the OAG Consumer and Tenant Response Hotline at 202-442-9828 and leave a message in their preferred language. A team member will return the call during business hours and assist with the process.

The OAG notes that CTR does not provide legal advice or legal representation and cannot force landlords or businesses to participate or agree to a specific outcome. The process is voluntary for all parties involved.

Complaints submitted through CTR also become matters of public record and may be shared with other law enforcement agencies when permitted by law.

More information and complaint submission details are available through the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.
