Cedar Hill Is the First New Full-Service Hospital to Open in DC in 25 Years

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, April 10 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Universal Health Services will cut the ribbon on the new Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health and deliver on a promise she made during her first year as Mayor: to bring a new full-service hospital East of the River. She will be joined by hospital and health care leaders and community members to celebrate the first new hospital built in the District in 25 years.

Officials will cut the ribbon tomorrow, and then the new hospital will open to patients next week on Tuesday, April 15 at 12:01 am. The opening of the hospital marks a major milestone in the Mayor’s vision to build a fully integrated health care system that ensures residents East of the River have better access to comprehensive, high-quality care.

The $434.4 million, 136-bed facility is located on the St. Elizabeths East campus in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Ward 8. When the full-service hospital opens next week it will have general hospital services; adult and children's emergency departments; maternal health and delivery, including a Level II NICU; trauma care; a 500-car parking garage; and a helipad for emergency transports. Cedar Hill will also have a full range of outpatient and specialty care services such as dialysis, infusion, cardiac rehab, physical therapy, and more. Universal Health Services (UHS) will operate and maintain the new hospital for 75 years and invest an additional $75 million in health care infrastructure in Wards 7 and 8.
