Councilmember Marion Barry introduces "WARD 8 ALCOHOL LICENSE MORATORIUM ACT OF 2013".

Wasn't this a surprise?! I stumbled across this little nugget while doing one of my daily "Ward 8" internet searches. I don't have a lot of information but I am including what I was able to find so far. It looks like the bill is being co-sponsored by Councilmembers Yvette Alexander and Muriel Bowser. To be honest, I am a little skeptical. I can't believe I haven't heard anything about this proposed bill before now. If true, this is a really big deal. Ward 8 residents have complained at length about the high number of liquor stores in Ward 8 and the negative effects they have on the community. Lord knows the current laws have certain limitations.

The bill proposes putting a moratorium on new Class A and B liquor licenses for Ward 8. Go HERE to view the bill summary on the DC Council website.

So what is a Class A and B license?
From ABRA:
Classes A and B
License Classes A and B apply to off-premises retailers—liquor stores, grocery stores, and wholesalers.
Class A (liquor stores, wholesalers): may sell beer, wine, and spirits
Class B (grocery stores, wholesalers): may sell beer and wine only
