Dear Department of Public Works: Please lift the Mellon St trashcan ban

The elusive neighborhood trash can
Lord knows I have asked for this many, many, times over the past three years, even this plea from two years ago exactly, but I am still holding out hope for a Christmas miracle. Dear Department of Public Works:  Can you please lift the "no public trash can ban" on Mellon Street SE?  I know you've said in the past that "DPW doesn't install trashcans in residential neighborhoods" but I think we both now that is a bunch of garbage (pun intended).  I have seen plenty of trashcans installed in residential neighborhoods.  Heck, I got several trashcans installed on my street by going to the 7D  listserv and since their installation litter on those streets has been cut down by about 80%.

Every time I walk down Mellon street I am amazed that despite the high volume of foot traffic, all the bus stops, the large apartment complexes, and the businesses on Mellon and MLK, there isn't one single public trash can the entire two blocks (and those are long blocks).  Concerned Mellon Street citizens ("Kudos" to them)  try and combat the litter by tying trash bags to their fences, putting their own trash cans out on the sidewalk,  and doing daily clean ups on the block, but its hard to combat the litter situation without the basic tools and services, namely public trash cans.

As citizens we are doing our part to keep our streets clean but can you meet us halfway? And while you are on the way can you bring a trashcan or two?

We sure would appreciate it.

P.S. No idea where the Advisory Neighborhood Commission stands on getting trash cans for Mellon Street but The Advoc8te recommends that residents contact their Single Member District Commissioner,  Dion Jordan of 8C02 to demand their trash can due.
