The 26th Annual DC Golden Olympics

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced today that registration has started for its’ signature senior event, the 26th Annual DC Golden Olympics. The theme for the 2009 games is “Fit 4 Life" which encourages and promotes healthy lifestyles for seniors through education, fitness, and competitive sports.

The 26th Annual DC Golden Olympics will be held May 4 - 8, 2009, and will feature medal competition in 18 sports, including swimming, tennis, track and field, basketball, table tennis, volleyball and more. The yearly competition, hosted by the DPR in partnership with the DC Office on Aging, showcases the athletic prowess of District residents ages 50 and above. The games provide an excellent way for seniors to maintain or improve their physical and mental condition as well as their coordination, while enjoying some friendly competition.

The DC Golden Olympics allows participants to qualify for the National Senior Games, which are held in odd years (2009, 2011). Last summer during the 25th Annual DC Golden Olympics, over 170 local senior athletes qualified for the 2009 Summer National Senior Games which will be held August 1 - 15, 2009, in San Francisco, CA.

The DC Golden Olympics opening ceremony will take place on Monday, May 4, 10 am, at the Emery Recreation Center, 5801 Georgia Avenue, NW.
