SORRY FOLKS, IT'S NOT GENTRIFICATION BUT REVITALIZATION

Change is not always bad. Revitalization does not always equal "gentrification" (whatever that means to you). A little neighborhood in Ward 8 - Anacostia -  can have a significant impact on the DC Arts scene.

If you don't know you better ask somebody... for directions.  Better still,  get on the green line tomorrow night and check out the opening receptions at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions (6pm - 8pm) and Honfleur Gallery (7pm-9pm) for a celebration of the  East of the River arts scene. Join us for a free night of art, music, food, and fun.  Tour the neighborhood and finally learn about the place that you were always told to avoid. Afterwards joins for a dance-a-thon at Big Chair Cafe  and Uniontown Bar + Grill.

It doesn't have to be the next U Street. It just has to be the next Anacostia. :)

Vivid Solutions DC and The Gallery at Vivid Solutions in Historic Anacostia

If you haven't checked out Vivid Solutions DC or The Gallery at Vivid Solutions in Historic Anacostia pay them a visit. The printing lab is a great place to have your photographs printed, you don't have to be a professional photographer to have your photos printed. It is also a great place to have large prints or panoramic photos printed. They even offer restoration services! Great way to get those old photos of  Nanny and PopPop restored to their former glory.

IN PICTURES: Anacostia Never Far From Home reception. Friday, July 30th

Posting some pictures of last Friday's Anacostia: Never Far From Home reception at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions in Historic Anacostia.  I have some even better pictures that I will post soon, once I manage to find them.  It was a great event and I was very honored to be one of the featured bloggers in the exhibition.  I had a great time collaborating with the other two bloggers, Fred Joiner and David Garber on our community wall. HGTV and Al-Jazeera were in attendance filming the event or David (lol) for their respective programs. It was a great event and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. "Big Ups" to everyone who came out to this exhibit and the East of the River art exhibitions.  For me, this event was very special  because my family came all the way up from Virginia Beach and fought horrible rush hour traffic to see the show.  I think it was unanimous that everyone thought  I look a lot like my mummy (who is gorgeous so I will happily take that compliment).

All in all a great show.  Please visit The Gallery at Vivid Solutions to check out the exhibition as well as to bring your pictures of Anacostia or Anacostia life and add them to the community wall.  Pictures will be returned after the exhibit so please bring them in to share with the community!

To have your pictures be a part of the community wall or to learn more about the series contact: Beth at  bferraro@archdc.org  / 202-365-8392

Three Years, Three Shows: Three is the Magic Number

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Contact: Briony Evans Hynson, Creative Director
Phone: 202-536-8994
arts@archdc.org
www.honfleurgallery.com

Exhibitions Open 3/12/10 @ 7pm in Anacostia
Arts patrons will have lots to discover in Anacostia this month. Opening on Friday, March 12th, Honfleur Gallery celebrates its third anniversary with the opening of the aptly named painting exhibition, Three, as well as an exhibition of the works of John K. Lawson, entitled NOW AND THEN. Up the street at The Gallery at Vivid Solutions digital maestro Brad Ulreich opens his exhibition La Femme Da Vine.

Three features paintings by artists Wesley Clark, Lance Wiggs & Jonathan Royce. The work by this younger cadre of local abstract painters features intense color, experimental techniques and an overarching prediliction for the art of layering. Stop-action video and works on canvas, panel and found objects will be included.

Honfleur’s upstairs exhibition space will highlight a new body of portraiture in the solo show NOW AND THEN. John K. Lawson returns to Anacostia with his signature collaged encaustic works using salvaged materials. Building on his past works that emerged from the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina, NOW AND THEN instead draws material from the digital world, amalgamating text, image and pixels in an arrangement that both outlines and obfuscates the portrait’s subject. A metaphor for the contemporary experience, Lawson explores “the relationship between the interior psychic self and the modern exterior world.” though he warns that “they are rendered with a sense of futuristic urgency... and not of a sentimental longing for a simpler past life.”

The Gallery at Vivid Solutions presents Brad Ulreich’s large-format renderings in La Femme da Vine hit upon a topic long targeted in the canon of art history, the female form. Digitally fusing imagery from anatomical drawings, fetishism, renaissance masterworks, and spiritual images, the women are a revamped take on classical imagery of madonnas and venuses.

Honfleur Gallery - 1241 Good Hope Road SE, Washington DC 20020- is a contemporary art space located in the Historic Anacostia. Opened in 2007, it maintains a rigorous schedule of exhibitions and programming that focuses on cutting edge contemporary exhibitions by living artists from the USA and abroad. http://www.honfleurgallery.com/

The Gallery at Vivid Solutions- 2208 MLK Jr. Avenue SE, Washington DC 20020- is a photography and digital arts space that is dedicated to showcasing and supporting established contemporary artists as well as aspiring local Washington, D.C. talents. http://www.vividsolutiondc.com/

Both galleries are projects of the ARCH Development Corporation whose mission is to act as a catalyst for cultural revitalization, primarily in the historic Anacostia neighborhood by creating a home for arts & artists, cultural organizations, and compatible businesses as a means to fulfill its objectives of community-based economic development and sustainable living neighborhoods.
