Howard University seeks applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Chief Academic Officer.

The Provost functions as Howard University’s Chief Academic Officer, and is responsible for ensuring the quality of Howard University's academic and clinical offerings, its faculty and its student academic experience as well as implementing the University’s academic renewal plan and clinical excellence aims; supporting synergy among all colleges, schools, academic departments, centers, institutes and professional programs; overseeing the research enterprise; and meeting the academic accreditation requirements and/or standards. Reporting to the Provost are all of the Deans of the schools and colleges, the health sciences enterprise, as well as the positions of Deputy, Associate and Assistant Provosts.

The next provost will demonstrate a record of teaching excellence and scholarly achievement complemented by significant administrative experience in a senior-level management position within a complex, major research university or comparable organization and be able to demonstrate a record of achievement, preferably at the dean level or higher. Candidates should exhibit a commitment to higher education with a background and exposure that includes a balanced emphasis on instruction, research and service and a sophisticated understanding of contemporary academic administrative functions, processes, and technology. An earned doctorate or equivalent credentials, a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly or professional attainment that merits appointment as a full professor within one of the University’s academic or clinical units is required. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, a high degree of energy, initiative, and organization, and demonstrated leadership skills that foster cooperation and respect within a diverse faculty, staff and student population. He/she will be an inspiring and creative intellectual leader who can clearly articulate the critical importance of Howard’s unique role and history in liberal arts education in an ever more complex and diverse society.
