Why ARCH Development Corporation uses arts and culture to revitalize Anacostia.

The Advoc8te took these pictures last night during the "Cheap Thrills" affordable art fair last night at Anacostia Arts Center. This event was free and open to the public and all the art work was under $500 -- and lots of it was sold last night! There was also a free ska concert. Over 200 people attended last night's event -- some visitors, some residents, and all were ready for a great time!  Every single one of those people contributed to the economic development and revitalization of Anacostia. The small businesses in and around the Anacostia Arts Center once again benefitted from a night of visitors, consumers, and admirers.

If a picture is worth a thousand words things are definetly looking up for Anacostia!

Has it ever been your sense that there is a conflict within Anacostia about which strategy to use when working towards revitalization?

From my limited experience there, it is my sense that there were two main camps, one saying that arts should be used as the main revitalization strategy while another wanted to tie revitalization into promotion of the historic district. Personally, I don't think they are in any kind of a conflict whatsoever, and I think they can compliment each other well.
