If the Department of Public Works ever tells you they don't install trashcans in residential neighborhoods...

Residents have been trying for Y-E-A-R-S to get much needed trashcans installed on high traffic streets in the neighborhood. Especially on Mellon Street SE which has a lot of foot traffic and several bus stops but not a single trashcan. Litter is a big issue on this street and residents have resorted to tying trash bags on their fences to try and curb the littering. Despite numerous requests from concerned citizens the response always seems to be from the Department of Public Works (up to and including Director Howland) that DPW doesn't install trashcans on residential streets.

The Advoc8te begs to differ. Here are a few of the trashcans I got installed last summer just by placing a request on the 7D listserve and the wonderful powers that be got on it right away.  Within TWO  days 4 trashcans were installed in my neighborhood and the litter issue was abated.

I guess you just have to know who or better yet where to ask. Here's to hoping that Mellon Street gets their trashcans soon - or at least in this decade. :)

The trashcans on Orange have been there for years and before Barry. Doesn't help much with the trash in the middle of the street though where I live.

You're right the Orange Street trash can in front of Barry has been there for a while. We did notice an improvmenet on the streets where our new trashcans are but I totally agree - if you go a long while without a trash can litter bugs are just going to toss their trash the first place they see fit. Also there has been an issue with some folks totally abusing the litter cans and using it as their own private dumpster. Totally inappropriate but I still think we can't overlook the need to have littercans in teh neighborhood - at least at the more busy bus stops.
