Reactions:

Barry Farm (re)Mixed is so becoming my most favorite blog.  Check out this excellent article on the reasoning behind rebranding neighborhoods. In our case, the River East vs East of the River debate.

I’d like to echo your comments and say great post.

This subject came up last week at the DC Mud blog. They had a post titled Sheridan Terrace Redevelopment Brings Hope to Ward 8.

In the comments section, I wrote

This is nit picky for sure. But you wouldn't say such and such is taking place in Ward 1, Ward 2, etc.

Might "River East" be better?

There were several replies that reflect the resistance to changing the name.

Even though the areas old and new don’t match up totally, I like River East. In addition to the things you have said, it makes it easier in terms of, for example, the labels at blogs. Labeling various articles and posts River East includes everything.

It's an excellent post and a great opportunity to initiate a dialogue.

EOTR hasn't been cutting it and the perception isn't going to change anytime soon. At least now you can get far along enough in the conversation with River East uniformed folks don't immediatly dismiss what the area has to offer becuase of the negative press surrounding EOTR or "over there". There really is a need for an informative campaign to educate non Ward 8 residents on the geography (Anacostia and Ward 8 aren't interchangable) and the history of Ward 8. Too many people are ignorant of the facts which leads to the fear and the misconceptions.
