MYFOX DC Keeps Perpetuating Bad Stereotypes About Southeast

Reactions:
Headline reads "7 injured in Southeast DC Shooting"

Problem is the shooting occurred in NORTHEAST.

Call it a typo call or a Freudian slip but this is the type of sloppy reporting that has added to Southeast DC having a bad (and often overexagerated) reputation as a place for violence. It's bad enough when local news stations refer to everything over the bridge as "Anacostia" but to post such a misleading and inaccurate headline is just poor reporting.

To send an email to Fox 5 and to ask them to please stop misreporting news about southeast (or as in this case news that did not occur in southeast) please click HERE. Also please let them know that Congress Heights is NOT located in Anacostia as they reported in their story last week on copperhead snakes bite two in SE.

wheres the headline?
in the clip, they only say NE.

Included the link to the article. :) WTOP did the same exact thing.

sigh.
is it really too much to ask that the media that covers our city actually knows our city?

Ditto. The only thing more frustrating is that when you try and call them on it and someone (usally someone who doesn't live here) doesn't understand the importance why River East/East of the River residents are so annoyed by the inaccuracies.

River East and Ward 8 in particular isn't perfect but what city is? The challenges faced by southeast are based part in reality and part in perception.

I've said it once and I will say it again. Southeast is in desperate need of a marketing makeover which is a big reason why I refuse to use "east of the river" and almost exclusively use "River East".
Weather or not you like the term "River East" it's a blank slate onto which positive images of a great community can be drawn.

Fair or unfair "Southeast" or "East of the River" has unfortunetly been so tarnished by the local media that any hopes of transforming the terms into something positive are an uphill battle that will likely not be overcome.

Um, once we get past the naming issue (which is important, and annoying; I can't stand watching the news and hearing something's happened in Southeast and then they don't say where...)...

COPPERHEADS? REALLY? On the street? I walk all over the place. This is my fifth year over here and first I'm hearing of copperheads. Is this a regular thing?

First time I heard about copperheadds and I walked over there all the time until I stopped because of the ticks jumping on my dog.

This stuff makes me so mad! Shootings don't automatically = southeast!

River East needs a makeover. Starting with Marion Barry and all of the ANC's. If they stopped stealing our money we could actually have a pretty nice neighborhood.

You know not to get me started on the ANCs. There may be some really great ANCs out there but from what I have seen I think there is a pretty good argument for a major overhaul of ANCs if not phasing them out all together. There is a big problem with an ANC just holding $100k with the exception of $12k that appears to have been making it's way into someone's pocket.

Hi all,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I'm terribly sorry for the mistake-- it was definitely not intentional. We've corrected the story about this weekend's shooting, which DEFINITELY did take place in Northeast, not Southeast.

Here's the new link to the story:
http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/dc/081709_7_injured_in_northeast_dc_shooting

We've taken the old link down, so you won't see the incorrect info on the web at all.

I also removed the reference to Anacostia in the copperheads story. That link will remain the same, but you won't see the incorrect neighborhood reference.

We appreciate your feedback, and I'm sorry for the inconvenience. If you have further questions or a story tip/idea to share with us in the future, don't hesitate to email us at myfoxdc@foxtv.com.

Thanks so much!

Thanks Emily! I saw the corrections. Now we won't have to keep seeing that headline flash in the news banner :)

It's A FOX station... what do you expect?

Have to scare all of the suburbanites, or they aren't doing their jobs.
